Vacancies

CRUMBS works on AI explainability, interpretability and, more generally, trustworthy AI for decision-making. If that sounds exciting, there are several ways to join us, whether as a PhD student or as a postdoc.

PhD students

If you’re interested in doing a PhD with me, please send me your CV and a brief description of your research interests and how they relate to our work. Please start your email subject with [CRUMBS-PhD], as it helps me make sure your email doesn’t get lost in my inbox!

Application process

Students who wish to pursue a PhD with me first need to apply to the Department of Computing. The procedure is described at this link. Don’t forget to mention my name as a potential supervisor when you submit your formal application!

Funding

PhD offers are conditional on securing funding to cover tuition fees and living expenses. To give yourself the best possible chance in the UK funding landscape, I highly recommend exploring the many PhD scholarships available. Here you can find a list of scholarships managed by Imperial. Other routes are possible too, e.g. some students fund their studies independently or through scholarships from their home countries.

Timeline

Most students start in October, but other start dates may be possible (typically December, February or April). Applications are reviewed after each deadline, and shortlisted candidates may be invited for interviews.

Postdocs

Open positions

There are no funded postdoc positions available at the moment. New positions will be advertised here as soon as they open, so do check back!

Fellowships

If you have your own research vision that fits with our work, a fellowship is a great way to join CRUMBS. Fellowships give you independent funding and the freedom to set your own research agenda, while being part of the group. I’m happy to support strong applications, and schemes I’d particularly encourage you to consider include:

  • Imperial College Research Fellowship (ICRF). Imperial’s own four-year fellowship for early-career researchers, designed to support the step from postdoc to independent researcher. I held one myself, so I’m happy to share what I learned!
  • Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship.
  • Other schemes, such as the Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships, EPSRC Postdoctoral Fellowships or Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowships.

Eligibility rules and deadlines change from year to year, so always check the scheme’s own website for the current call.

Getting in touch

Please contact me well before the deadline, ideally a few months ahead, since most schemes involve an internal selection process at Imperial. Start your email subject with [CRUMBS-Postdoc], and include your CV, a short summary (one page is plenty) of the research you’d like to pursue and how it connects to our work, and the scheme(s) you’re considering.
